Map the card structure before comparing providers
Terms such as virtual, open-loop, closed-loop, digital gift card, and purchase-linked describe different properties. Treat them as decision dimensions, not interchangeable labels.
Separate format from acceptance
Virtual or physical describes how a card is delivered and accessed. Open-loop or closed-loop describes where value may be used. A useful shortlist records both dimensions and checks them against the promised customer experience.
Connect the card to the Shopify offer
Document the eligible order, the decision point, the recipient notification, the intended use experience, returns handling, support ownership, and any provider dependencies before choosing a card type.
Confirm, do not assume
A familiar Visa or Mastercard reference does not establish program availability or terms. Obtain written confirmation for the proposed provider, issuer, market, card format, acceptance model, and customer disclosures.
